Rain on your wedding day – How to handle it?

Rain on your wedding day – Embrace the unexpected for unique memories

The thought of rain on your wedding day might seem daunting at first, but don’t worry: with a little preparation, you can handle this situation effortlessly. In fact, these moments can turn into truly unforgettable memories.

Planning and flexibility

Let’s start with the morning: checking the rain radar can provide clarity. Perhaps the rain is only forecast for certain times? If your schedule allows, consider shifting the photo shoot to a dry moment. Flexibility in your planning is key.

Outdoor locations: Finding shelter in the open

If your timeline doesn’t allow for spontaneous adjustments, it’s a good idea to scout for covered outdoor locations ahead of time. Natural daylight remains one of the best light sources for photos, even on a rainy day.

  • In the city: Look for arches, alcoves, or the overhangs of large buildings, which often provide both shelter and a beautiful backdrop.

  • Historic sites: Monasteries with open cloisters are especially charming, but be sure to get permission to photograph there in advance.

  • Other options: If the rain isn’t too heavy, large trees or umbrellas can provide sufficient protection. Transparent or white umbrellas work best for photos, as they allow soft light to filter through.

Indoor locations: Elegance and comfort

Sometimes, moving the shoot indoors is the best option. Luckily, there are plenty of great alternatives:

  • Hotels: Are you staying at a hotel? A stylish lobby, a large window front, or a grand staircase could make the perfect backdrop.

  • Local gems: Covered botanical gardens, libraries, or museums often provide stunning and weather-proof options.

  • Using flash for impact: Indoors, flash photography can create striking effects. This is especially true for modern and editorial-style shoots, where flash can add dramatic and artistic flair. The interplay of light and shadow can result in images that feel straight out of a magazine.

Coordination with your photographer

Be sure to discuss your ideas with your photographer. Their experience will help determine which locations are most suitable from a photographic perspective.

The most important rule: Don’t stress!

From my experience as a wedding photographer, I can assure you: there’s always a solution. While rain might initially seem like an obstacle, it can also provide an opportunity for extraordinary and atmospheric photos. The key is to not let the weather dampen your spirits.

Enjoy your day with your loved ones and make it an unforgettable experience!
